Laying railway track is an expensive and disruptive operation. It involves the lifting of rail track, packing ballast under the track and tamping the ballast to ensure a level, maintenance free railway line. Vibrating tines are inserted into the ballast and vibration continued until the rail track is level and parallel. Reliability in a hostile environment is of paramount importance.
